A carpet that has been laid directly onto a marble or tile floor without an underlay flattens within a year, transmits every footstep, and feels cold underfoot in winter. We use a 10 mm rubber-crumb underlay as the baseline for residential wall-to-wall, and a denser felt for high-traffic offices.
